USEFUL INFORMATION
Language
The official language is French, although locals often speak Creole when talking amongst themselves. English is spoken at most of the larger hotels. In most other places, it is understood rather than spoken. If you have not got a basic command of French, a phrase book will prove very useful.
Currency
The currency in Martinique is the Euro as in France. Some restaurants and shops may accept US dollars, however the exchange rate is often poor. Exchange rates are also generally poor at hotels.
Time Difference
Time difference is GMT minus 4hrs.
VISA and Entry Requirements
Citizens from the European Union only require a passport or official national identity card. Citizens from USA and Canada can stay up to 3 months simply by showing their passports. Citizens from most other countries require a valid passport, visa and usually an onward ticket to prove that you are going to leave Martinique.
Electricity
Sockets in Martinique are exactly the same as in France. 220 volts 50 cycles with 2 round pins. Hotel bathrooms often have shower outlets that take 110 volt or 220 volt plugs.
