MARTINIQUE RUM & DISTILLERIES
Today, there remains around 300 sugar cane plantations and over 2,000 hectares in Martinique for an annual production of 250,000 tonnes of sugar cane.
The rum in Martinique is argued to be the best in the world, as the distilleries have maintained their traditional approaches to creating rum. There remains eleven rum distilleries on the island. We recommend visits to Habitation Clement, Habitation Depaz and Habitation Saint James.
Habtiation Clement, Le Francois
Habitation Clement is a Creole house perched on a hill overlooking the distillery and botanical gardens. The architecture, interior design and antique furniture of this listed house illustrate the colonial Creole lifestyle and adaptation to life in the tropics.
The botanical garden covers 16 hectares open to the public. As you walk around the gardens, you will discover over 300 species of tropical plants and trees.
The old distillery, disused in 1988 and restored in 2005, now houses the Rhum Clement interpretation centre. In this location, dedicated to the industrial heritage, you can discover the different thematic exhibitions, history and production of rum, with the regular movement of steam machines and mills.
The four storehouses of the Habitation Clement store thousands of litres of rum, which patiently matures for at least three years. www.habitation-clement.fr
The Depaz Rum Distillery, Saint-Pierre
The Depaz Rum Distillery and Plantation has been exceptionally located below Montagne Pellée for nearly four centuries and was reconstructed after the volcano erupted in 1902. It is well worth visiting this distillery to discover the history of the site and to sample some of the best rums in the world. A 3 course meals at the restaurant costs just 18 euros. The chateaux will also be open to the public in the summer of 2008. www.depaz.fr
